Best VPN for Netflix

NordVPN is the best VPN for Netflix, since Security.org's test found it unblocked all five libraries it tried on the first attempt, with Surfshark, Proton VPN, Private Internet Access and ExpressVPN also reaching every library. Pick based on price, device limits and region coverage, switch servers if Netflix shows a proxy error, and use the 30-day money-back guarantee to confirm it works before you commit.

This page ranks each VPN provider as of October 27, 2026. We did not run our own speed or unblocking tests for this page. Where a result comes from a test, we name the source. Netflix blocks VPN traffic where it can, so a VPN service that supports Netflix streaming today can stop working later.

The best VPNs for Netflix at a glance

Five paid VPNs for Netflix reached every library in the third-party test we cite, and the list below ranks them from first to fifth.

  1. NordVPN: best overall for streaming Netflix, with the strongest unblocking result in the third-party test we cite.
  2. Surfshark: the best budget-friendly pick, which also reached all five tested libraries.
  3. Proton: best for reaching a wide range of regional Netflix libraries.
  4. Private Internet Access: best for unlimited devices on one plan.
  5. ExpressVPN: best for people who want a simple app and are happy to pay more.

Best VPNs for Netflix, reviewed

Each review covers price, speed, the feature that matters most for Netflix, and one drawback. All five are paid plans from a premium VPN provider rather than a free service. Prices come from each provider’s own pricing page unless noted. They change often and many are promotional, so check the current figure before you buy.

1. NordVPN

It ranks first in this list. In Security.org’s 2026 test of five libraries (UK, Spain, Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands), it unblocked all five on the first try. That is the feature that matters most here: a VPN that is good at unblocking Netflix without trial and error saves time.

Price: third-party listings show the one-month Basic plan at $12.99, with longer plans costing less per month. All plans carry a 30-day money-back guarantee, according to the research we gathered. Its own site was not readable when we gathered this information, so confirm the current price on its pricing page.

Speed: Security.org reports that 4K video loaded about five seconds slower than normal over the VPN connection. That is a small delay, and playback was not described as a problem.

Drawback: it costs more than Surfshark and Private Internet Access, according to the same review.

2. Surfshark

Surfshark is a good second choice. Security.org says it accessed all five libraries in its test. Surfshark’s own site lists more than 4,500 servers in 100 countries and a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Price: third-party price trackers put the two-year Starter plan at about $1.99 per month in US dollars, with renewal estimated at about $4.98 per month. Surfshark’s own pricing page was running a Black Friday promotion in Canadian dollars when we checked, so treat the headline price as a sale price.

Speed: Security.org describes WireGuard connections as slow in its test. If speed matters most, the first pick looks better on that point.

Drawback: Surfshark has no streaming-optimized servers, and Security.org notes it may log IP addresses for up to 15 minutes. Monthly plans are also expensive compared with the long-term price.

Try Surfshark for Netflix

3. Proton VPN

It is the pick for people who want to access Netflix in more than one or two regions. Security.org gave it 5 of 5 in its test and says it works with more than 15 other regional libraries. Proton’s own pricing page lists more than 20,000 servers in over 140 countries on paid plans.

Price: VPN Plus is $3.49 per month on the two-year plan, down from $9.99. Proton Unlimited is $7.99 per month on the two-year plan. Paid plans include a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Speed: we have no speed measurement for Proton to report, so we leave speed out of the verdict.

Drawback: the free plan does not support streaming, so you need a paid plan to stream Netflix. Security.org also says the 30-day refund is prorated, which the provider’s pricing page does not mention, so read the refund terms before you pay.

Try Proton for Netflix

4. Private Internet Access

Private Internet Access (PIA) is a strong value if you plan to commit long term. Security.org says it reached all five test libraries, though the first Dutch VPN server was detected by Netflix and the second one worked. That is a useful reminder that switching servers is often the fix.

Price: PIA lists one month at $11.95, one year at $3.99 per month ($47.88 for the first year), and three years plus three months at $2.03 per month ($79, renewing every three years). All new subscribers get a 30-day money-back guarantee. PIA lists servers in 113 countries and allows unlimited simultaneous devices.

Speed: Security.org reports occasional reduced quality while streaming.

Drawback: the best price requires a three-year plan, and Security.org describes support as mixed.

5. ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN also unblocked all five libraries in Security.org’s test. Its appeal is a simple app experience and broad coverage, with servers in 113 countries according to its order page.

Price: the two-year Basic plan is $2.99 per month, Advanced is $4.49 per month, and Express Pro is $7.49 per month. Each plan is billed for two years and four months. New users get a 30-day money-back guarantee, Basic covers 10 devices, and Basic renews at $99.95 per year.

Speed: Security.org says Netflix loaded slower than normal on ExpressVPN.

Drawback: it is pricey compared with the other providers here, and it has no streaming-optimized servers.

How we compare the best VPN for Netflix

We judged each provider on the points that decide whether a top VPN is useful for Netflix. Because we did not run our own tests, the unblocking and speed points rely on Security.org’s published results and are labeled as such. We left out CyberGhost VPN and other providers because the research for this page does not cover them.

Server and country counts differ between sources, so we used the provider’s own figure wherever we could read it and left the rest out. The top pick’s own site was not readable for this page, which is why we do not quote its server count.

Why a VPN helps with Netflix

Licensing deals mean the Netflix content you see depends on where you are, so each country gets a different catalog. A VPN encrypts your connection and routes it through a server in another country, so Netflix servers see that server’s IP address instead of yours and treat you as being in that Netflix region. That lets you reach another country’s catalog, for example when traveling and wanting to watch Netflix US as you do at home.

Netflix says it does not support VPN usage on ad-supported plans. When its VPN detection finds one, the error reads “You seem to be using a VPN or proxy. Please turn off any of these services and try again.” It may show code E106. In 2016 Netflix said it would block proxies and unblockers, and an executive said it relies on blacklists of VPN exit points. That is why providers keep adding and swapping servers, and why free VPNs rarely hold up. Proton’s free plan, for example, does not list streaming support.

How to set up the best VPN for Netflix

Setup is similar for all Netflix VPNs and takes a few minutes on any device.

  1. Pick a VPN service from the list above and choose a plan. Each offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can test it on Netflix before the window closes.
  2. Install the VPN app on your phone, tablet, computer or streaming device.
  3. Sign in, start the VPN connection and choose a VPN server in the country whose Netflix library you want.
  4. Close and reopen the Netflix app, or refresh the browser tab, then sign in and search for a title you know is in that library.
  5. If Netflix detects the server and shows an error, disconnect and connect to a different server in the same country. PIA’s Dutch result above shows that one server can fail while the next works.

If the error persists, Netflix suggests a few checks. Open fast.com to see which country it reports under “Client”. Reset your network settings. If the IP address shown matches your home address, contact your internet provider about DNS settings.

Which VPN is number one for Netflix?

NordVPN ranks first in this list. Security.org reports it unblocked all five libraries it tested on the first try, and it comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Does Netflix block VPNs?

Yes, Netflix actively tries to block VPNs. It says VPNs are not supported on ad-supported plans, and in 2016 it said it would block proxies and unblockers using blacklists of VPN exit points. Some providers still get through, but access can change over time.

What should I do if Netflix says I seem to be using a VPN or proxy?

Switch to a different server in the same country and try again. Netflix also suggests checking fast.com for your “Client” country, resetting your network settings, and contacting your internet provider about DNS if the IP address shown matches your home.

Can I use a free VPN for Netflix?

Usually not. Proton’s free plan does not list streaming support, and free plans typically offer a limited set of servers. A paid plan with a 30-day money-back guarantee is a safer way to try one.

Which VPN is cheapest for Netflix?

Surfshark is the lowest at about $1.99 per month on its two-year plan according to third-party price trackers, followed by Private Internet Access at $2.03 per month on its three-year plan. Compare renewal prices before you buy, because the first-term rate is often much lower.

How many devices can I use with a Netflix VPN?

It depends on the provider and plan. Private Internet Access allows unlimited simultaneous devices, and ExpressVPN Basic covers 10. Check the plan details for the device limit before you buy.
