Blackberry Playbook VPN setup tutorial and howto


UPDATE: Updated to include Playbook OS v2.0 and v1.0. See the settings and screen shots at step 4 (VPN setup) below for v2.0 settings.

This tutorial will show you how to setup a VPN on your Blackberry Playbook with VPNReactor. If you don't have a VPNReactor VPN account, then signup here.

Download our Security Certificate

  • PC: Download the VPNReactor CA Security Certificate and unzip to your PC


  • Playbook: Go to your settings menu




  • Playbook: Go to Storage & Sharing

      Make sure that Wifi sharing and file sharing are turned on.




  • Playbook & PC: Wi-Fi Network

      Make sure both your PC & Playbook are using the same Wi-Fi network.



  • Playbook: Go to: About / Network / Wi-fi / IPv4

      Now it's time to check your playbook IP. Go to the About menu, choose the Network dropdown menu and the go down to Wi-Fi IPv4. Write down your IP address



  • PC: Go to: Start menu / Search field

      Go to your Windows start menu and then your search box. Type in "\\your.playbook.ip" and hit "return" to navigate to your playbook file system.

      Note: You must have previously installed the Blackberry Playbook tools on your PC in order to browse it's file system.



  • PC: Go to: Certs Folder

      You should now see two folders. Open your 'Certs' folder.



  • PC: Copy 'ca.vpnreactor' to Certs folder



  • Playbook: Go to: Settings / Security / Certificates

      Now it's time to import the VPNReactor Security Certificate into your Playbook. Tap on 'Certificates'



  • Playbook: Go to: Import

      Once in the Certificates settings, Tap on 'Import'



  • Playbook: Import Certificates section

      Once in the 'Import Certificates' settings, set the following:

    • Check 'VPN'
    • Class: 'Trusted Authority'

    • When set... Click 'Next'



  • Playbook: Select 'ca.vpnreactor.cer'

      Once in the Import Certificates screen, select 'ca.vpnreactor.cer' then tap on 'Import'

      Note: If you don't see 'ca.vpnreactor.cer' listed go back to Step 11 and make sure "Class: 'Trusted Authority' is selected. Otherwise repeat steps 1-11



  • Playbook: Go to: Settings / Security / Certificates / All Certificates

      Now go back to the Certificates screen and select 'All Certificates'. Scroll down until you see 'sstp.vpnreactor.com' If you see it then now you can proceed to setup your VPN. If not repeat steps 1-12.



  • Congratulations!

    You now have successfully imported the VPNReactor Security Certificate.

    Now lets setup your VPN.



Playbook VPN Setup

  • Playbook: Go to your settings menu



  • Playbook: Go to: Security / VPN



  • Playbook: Tap: Add New

      tap on 'Add New' to create your VPNReactor VPN Profile



  • Playbook: Enter your VPN Settings

      Now enter the following VPN settings. Make sure you enter them EXACTLY as listed here. Click on the image to enlarge the screen capture.

        Playbook OS v 1.0 settings:

        Profile Name: vpnreactor
        Server Address: sstp.vpnreactor.net OR uk.vpnreactor.net
        Gateway Type: Microsoft IKEv2 VPN Server
        Authentication Type: EAP-MSCHAPv2
        Authentication ID Type: IPv4
        MSCHAPv2 EAP Identity: your VPNReactor username
        MSCHAPv2 Username: enter your VPNReactor username again
        MSCHAPv2 Password: your VPNReactor password


        Gateway Auth Type: PKI
        Gateway Auth ID Type: Identity Certificate Distinguished Name
        Gateway CA Certificate: sstp.vpnreactor.com

        When done click 'Save / Connect'


        Playbook OS v 2.0 settings:

        Profile Name: vpnreactor
        Server Address: sstp.vpnreactor.net OR uk.vpnreactor.net
        Gateway Type: Microsoft IKEv2 VPN Server
        Authentication Type: EAP-MSCHAPv2
        Authentication ID Type: Fully Qualified Domain Name
        Authentication ID: your VPNReactor username
        MSCHAPv2 Password: your VPNReactor password


        Gateway Auth Type: PKI
        Gateway Auth ID Type: Identity Certificate Distinguished Name
        Gateway CA Certificate: sstp.vpnreactor.com

        When done click 'Save / Connect'











  • Playbook: Good Job... Your all done :-). You should now be connected to your VPN

      You should now be back in the VPN screen. To the right of the VPNReactor VPN Profile you should see two green arrows. If present that means you hae an active VPN connection.



  • Congratulations!

    You have now setup your VPN.

    Now go to VPNReactor.com and verify your IP address is secure.
    Once the VPNReactor homepage is loaded, look in the upper left corner to see your New IP and verfication that your inetnet is Secure.
